Review of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) by Steve B — 11 Apr 2017
Given the overall ratings, I must be in a minority in finding this movie disappointing.
I really enjoyed the last Star Wars reboot though am not a huge fan of the saga, which I felt ran out of steam several films ago.
Rogue One has a confusing plot line, undeveloped and unsympathetic characters and amazingly improbable plot devices, even by Star Wars standards.
For example, the rebels communications rely at one point on throwing a "master switch" which is conveniently placed in the middle of an open area, albeit one that has been.
Turned into a war zone by that point.
Even then, implausibility is stretched beyond breaking point by its being thrown by a blind man, who strides across the ground under extreme cross fire muttering "the force is with me and I am with the force", his standard mantra.
Throughout the film until his demise.
The film relies largely on standard rebels v empire shoot ups, which have been seen a million times before. Quite exciting but unimaginative, which pretty much sums up the whole film for me.
