Review of Rogue (2007) by Dave H — 25 Jul 2008
Not bad, but everything in this genre is always going to suffer in comparison to Jaws. At least it's a helluva lot more thrilling than the likes of Anaconda. The first half is ok - disparate characters and slow build up of foreboding, but the central characters/actors don't really create enough sympathy.
Just like in Jaws, the boat attacks sans-predator-view pack the most punch, and the first munching of John Wayne (though mishandled in editing) has a shocking view of the tail retreating. Post the first attack, the "group under pressure" stuff on the boat and tidal island isn't long enough, and once on the mainland the cave scenes lose a lot of this momentum.
The croc CGI is adequate, but the croc moves either too fast in the water, or too slow on land, or maybe both. Nevertheless, the film gave my girlfriend cause to bury her face in my armpit in the scary bits.
No classic, for sure, but decent schlock fun.
