Review of Rogue (2007) by Jason D — 08 Aug 2008
After a very long wait and through great misuse by the asshole folks at Dimension, Rogue finally made it's way to a paltry Direct to DVD release this past week. Just as I suspected, the film was spectacular.
Greg McLean does a lot of unconventional things with this film to make it vastly different than many other nature run-amok films. The cast is unique, comprising of big ticket name Radha Mitchell (giving us her quite hot Australian accent for once) being purposely underused to the point where it is not noticeable and you still enjoy her screen time.
Michael Vartan is great as the American tourist who steps up to the hero plate, as does Sam Worthington whose screen time is limited but manages to play two different sides of the same character in a way that is enjoyable.
Even baddie from McLean's superior Wolfcreek film, John Jarratt, shows up and gives us a worry and much different and more sympathetic character. The usage of blood is relatively light as well as the deaths, but the violence and action are certainly present throughout the movie, leaving it to be an enjoyable 95 minutes.
As I expected, this film is completely different from McLean's Wolfcreek, showing his range and ability to tell a story. I enjoyed the film quite a bit and look forward to what he has next to offer.
