Review of Rogue (2007) by Ryan S — 23 Sep 2008
Just like he did with Wolf Creek, Greg McLean is able to fashion another seemingly familiar horror plot line into something much more. The film follows a similar pace as Wolf Creek, with McLean taking his time early on and developing the characters into something you don't often see in horror films: people you can understand and relate to.
But when the croc shows up, McLean then shows he has an eye for suspense, building it well and having solid pay-offs. His ability to take the beauty of the outback and then turn that beauty on itself once the storm arrives is equally impressive.
He also knows what and what not to show, which is another great aspect of the film. Though the end is familiar, and the croc not that impressive when fully exposed (because of the CGI), Rogue is still a very above average horror film, and shows that McLean is a horror director that knows what he's doing.
