Review of Rogue (2007) by Koulla S — 10 Jan 2009
Another solid effort by Greg McLean. 2/3 of the film was up to par with the quality I was expecting, but the final act was too commercial, too much of a cop-out. I love that McLean has the balls to break from horror conventions, so it's a shame that he would back out at the last second (perhaps because of the accusations of Wolf Creek being misogynistic?).
Nonetheless, a wonderful opening act, and it's beautifully shot. Where Wolf Creek used the desolate scenery of the outback to emphasize isolation and hopelessness, Rogue focuses on the natural world to create a dichotomy between the beautiful territory and the monster.
I certainly hope that with his next feature, McLean will meet his full potential.
