Review of Rogue (2007) by Manon M — 18 Dec 2011
I caught "Rogue" on television per accident and I was quite surprised how solid it is because most films dealing with killer beasts are just plain awful. This is next to Jaws probably the best film of its type - a film that finally shows the audiences that good writers, a creative direcrtion, sharp special effects and strong actors all together can result in a compelling and well-crafted horror flick.
Rogue is neither original nor groundbreaking, but it has something very important: tension. The pacing is slow and intense, and some scenes are definitely quite scary - actually very untypical for killer beast films. Rogue is the first film of its type since Jaws that actually made me shiver... Usually these films don't scare me at all but mostly annoy me, but I promise, Rogue has some very very good scares! Probabaly also, because it is feels so fucking real. It's not as fake or stereotypical as most killer beast films... it is very very different. Sometimes the tension was so fucking unbearable...brilliant!!
As I mentioned earlier, the acting is a big plus in this film - Michael Vartan, Radha Mitchell and Sam Worthington are terrific, adding a lot of quality to the whole concept.
What's more, is that Rogue is filled with beautiful and raw nature shots of the Australian outback. Beautifully filmed, it does bring out the right atmosphere, and with its captivating sounds everything just fits perfectly.
Sam Worthington just dies way too soon... ;( *lol* This isn't a criteria tho ;-).
