Review of Roger Dodger (2002) by Seth M — 29 Jan 2008
Despite its flaws; an underwhelming performance from Jesse Eisenberg and a final scene that is a bit awkward and tagged on, this film is just mesmerizing. A lot of that has to do with a fantastic performance from Scott, who goes from the pinnacle of poise to a wounded animal. The subtlety to the character of Roger is what makes this movie so amazing, that and the great dialogue. The first scene may be one of my favorite in movie history. All of the dialogue is delivered so confidently that Rodger quickly becomes impossible to not watch.
The direction serves to further the story so well. The viewer is in the middle of the conversation, you are the third person traveling around with Rodger. This direction forces you to feel the nerves of a night on the town, your mind goes to another state entirely.
Go see this movie, it is not just another coming of age story. It is a night on the town with the most fascinating person on the planet.
