Had this movie continued down it's dark descent it could've been a notch better. It certainly wasn't very comedic; I found it quite Edmond-like. Roger is a pretentious, disgusting, unhappy creep - something his nephew appeared to be realizing.
But, based on the ending, I believe we are actually supposed to like this guy. Or perhaps he was attempting to save his dead soul. Either way, this movie was a dud.
