Review of Rocky V (1990) by Eric C — 22 Nov 2009

I love this film, despite what everyone else, even Stallone himself has said. People by this time was so used to a money hungry Rocky that seeing him back on the streets of South Philly was weird for people.

John Advildsen is still a great director, who knows what he wants in the franchise and Stallone will forever know the Rocky character.

The biggest highlight for was the street fight with Tommy Gunn(with real life boxer Tommy Morrison). I saw this in the theaters, the same night I saw Child's Play II and it looked amazing.

Newcomers Richard Gant, Tommy Morrison and Sage Stallone also have there moments. Sage's performance is good, but a bit annoying at time. His whole presence is a huge continuity problem for Rocky fans. Gant's performance is probably my favorite of the new three. He's very much like how Don King was said to have been with Tyson. I said it in a previous review, each film tackles a new issue in Rocky's life and this is no different.

Great semi-finale to one of the best franchises ever.

TRIVIA:

Several scenes were shot featuring a drug addicted Maria from the first film and a drunken Rocky. These scenes have never officially been released, but are featured on the workprint version.

Joey B Ellis filmed a music video for his single "Go For It" with Tyetta Hare. Not available on any DVD.

The song "Take You Back" that is heard in the film id by The 7A3 and is based off the song by Frank Stallone, from the first two films.

Elton John performed the theme song "Measure Of A Man".

The original ending had Rocky dying in Adrian's arms. I don't know if this is still in excistance, but Stallone has said that it was filmed.
