Review of Rocky V (1990) by Bob And Lyle X — 21 May 2010
Bob: I think the Rocky films finally overstayed their welcome with Rocky V. Sylvester Stallone is back *again* as Rocky, but this time he is finally retired. Of course, he's been retiring since the second movie, so I think we all know how long that's going to last. Rocky V has nothing really going for it. It has none of the heart or effort of the previous films, and I didn't like what they did with the character. He's lost everything that it took him four movies to gain. I know what Stallone was trying to do, but the audience doesn't want to see him lose everything. And having him become a trainer doesn't do anything either. And I didn't like the end of this movie. Actually, I didn't like the beginning or middle of the picture either. I just hated this movie.
Lyle: Well, I do think Rocky fans are going to like this film a little less than any of the others, but I did think it was actually one step up from the previous film because it got away from that bloody formula I was sick of seeing. Is it a good film? No. But I liked the way it stayed away from the formula, and I *did* like the street fight at the end of the picture. But, that's about all I liked about it.
Bob: I can't believe you liked this garbage over the last film. The last film had heart. This film did not! Rocky V was a disgrace to the original film.
Lyle: I don't think it was a disgrace to the original film. I think it was trying to bring the film back to its roots. It's not a good film, but I did think its heart was in the right place.
