Review of Rocky V (1990) by Danny C — 09 Sep 2010
The great thing about the Rocky franchise is that it feels so real. Rocky V takes place directly after the fight scene in Rocky IV. Rocky is obviously having some difficulties shaking and not remembering names. He calls Adrian Mick and seems a bit more punchy than usual. Because of his fight with Ivan Drago he had to forfeit the title and it's now vacant. Unscrupulous promoter and Don King look -a- like George Washington Duke attempts to lure Rocky out of his retirement to fight number one contender Union Cane.
Adrian finds out that somehow Paulie lost all Rocky's money and they were all once again poor. After Rocky finds out he decides to accept the fight with Cane just for the payday but Adrian insists he see a doctor.
The Stallion goes and finds out he has irreversable brain damage from the years of taking such violent blows to the nogen. Rocky is finally forced into permanent retirement and he moves back to the old hood with Adrian, Robert and Paulie.
Rocko decides to run Micky's gym and train young fighters when a 20 year old hungry up and comer named Tommy "The Machine" Gunn gets ole Rock to manage and train him. But the success gets in young Tommy's head. He eventually aligns himself with Washington and challenges Rocko to a street fight.
I'm probably one of ten people that actually like the fifth one. It's very realistic in my opinion. Mike Tyson went bankrupt and is a bit punchy too. Evander Holyfield doesn't have a cent to his name. Allegedly Muhammad Ali has Parkinson's Disease from the years of violent blows to the head. Rocky's story here is believable and that's why I appreciate the fifth installment. Just as the fourth though there's some obvious cornball scenes but in all it's a great movie with an even better plot. The soundtrack is very '90s-esque with old school rap and hip hop and the end fight scene is damn good. Can't go wrong with Rocky V!
