Review of Rocky V (1990) by Stephen Z — 16 Aug 2015
"Rocky V" is like a worst-hits album for the Rocky film franchise. The film is much like a soap opera, in that the dialogue is cheesy, the drama is bad, and the performances of the entire cast are all like they didn't want to be there, even the once-charming Stallone.
I do appreciate its initiative in trying to deviate from the formula because Rocky as a trainer seems like a natural direction to go, and it would've been a stretch for Rocky to box again, but ultimately, it's just not the same without Rocky in the ring.
Not only are we not invested in newcomer, Tommy Gunn, but his fights aren't even enjoyable. And that is a great way to sum up this film; I'm not invested in it, and it is not enjoyable.
