Review of Rocky IV (1985) by Kylee L — 10 Nov 2010
*Spoilers*.
If I'm remembering it correctly, I think literally the very next scene after Apollo Creed's funeral is a press conference in which Rocky announces to the world that he's going to fight Ivan Drago, the guy who killed Apollo just one scene prior. There's no true moment of reflection, no "should I do this?" moment, nothing. The movie assumes that the audience knows the structure of these movies by now so, uh, it just gets to "the point", which is something that the Rocky films HAD been good about not doing up until this one. I'm not a huge fan of the third "Rocky" film, which I called "Rocky-by-numbers", but this TRULY is the very definition of a by-the-numbers film. Nothing feels like it really matters. If you remove the corny USA vs. Russia plot element, it's just a lifeless remake of the third one.
And wayyyy too many montages.
