Review of Rocky IV (1985) by Ali S — 04 Jul 2011
This is one of those "it's so bad it's bad" movies. It was seriously hilariously bad. How could they go from something as fun and emotion-filled as Rocky to this? Three sequels...that's how. Here's hoping Rocky V can pull it around.
But for now, we look at Rocky IV.
First of all, half of the movie is simply a montage that reviews the previous three Rocky movies. I'm serious. This thing goes on forever. What an obvious attempt to fill time.
And filler they needed because there wasn't really much else to go on. Probably because they decided to make the theme Russia. And sterotypically Russian at that. I'm talking vodka-drinking, fur-wearing, super-human-creating Russians.
Of course, that fits in perfectly with the totally over-the-top '80's flair. Rocky IV is so eighties that it makes the band Flock of Seagulls look contemporary. If you don't believe me, I have two words for you - robot butler. I can't make these things up. Rocky buys a robot for a butler.
The other little detail that totally annoyed me was how the character of Pauly has been relegated to comic relief guy.
So, at this point, I'm suggesting that you watch Rocky and Rocky II and then step away from the DVD player. I feel like I have to keep going now just to say I rounded out the series but save yourself!
