Review of Rocky III (1982) by Luke P — 09 Mar 2009
After the quite serious and gritty Rocky and Rocky 2, Rocky 3 saw the series take a turn into excessive, over-the-top, over-blown and silly style. But, you know what, I love it. Sylvester Stallone writes and directs this third instalment, which sees Rocky Balboa successfully defending his World championship and enjoying the decadent lifestyle that entails (he even gets a cameo on the Muppet Show!), before Mr T turns up and clobbers the crap out of him, taking his title, and Mickey dies of a heart attack as well! This all leads to an awesome final act though, with Balboa teaming up with old rival Apollo Creed to win back his title.
It is ridiculous, but the emotions are real. You want to whoop and punch your fists in the air when Rocky takes down Mr T. Add to that the greatest rock ballad ever in Survivor's Eye of the Tiger, and enough montages to make Sergei Eisenstein squeal with delight, and you have Rocky 3.
99 minutes of patriotic, sweat drenched, testosterone laced awesomeness.
