Review of Rocky II (1979) by Bob And Lyle X — 21 May 2010
Lyle: In Rocky II, Sylvester Stallone returns as the titular character, but his return is a little unwelcomed. This movie is full of the predictability and cheesiness that the first movie had, but none of the first movie's charm or wit. Sylvester Stallone still gives 100%, but I'm not so sure that anyone else is. Plus, the whole basis of this movie is just a set-up to give audiences who were dissatisfied with the ending from the first film their dream ending. I thought the ending was weak, I thought the beginning was weak, and I thought that, overall, this was just a weak effort.
Bob: Really? Because I didn't think it was a weak effort at all. I enjoyed this movie. I really did. I thought that the filmmakers really did a nice job of setting up the story so that Rocky *needs* to have the rematch with Apollo Creed that he said he wouldn't have in the first movie. I know it was all just an excuse to make a sequel, but there was a lot of effort put into the making of this picture, and I really appreciated that.
Lyle: You're kidding me, right? You thought there was a lot of effort put into the story? Because I didn't. I thought it was all just thrown together at the last minute. These guys are doing nothing more than looking for an excuse to put Rocky into another movie.
Bob: Yes, but it works! And I can't believe that you think this story was so thin. You keep saying this movie was weak, but I could not disagree more. I thought it had a very nice and strong story.
Bob's Rating: ****.
Lyle's Rating: **.
Overall: 60%.
