Review of Rocky II (1979) by Andrew B — 08 Dec 2015
The original Rocky was never supposed to be a huge film, it was never supposed to garner as much attention and praise as it received and it surely was never meant to win any Oscars, let alone Best Picture, but guess what ? It did.
Just like the underdog title character of the film, the movie itself was an underdog that came out of nowhere and shot straight to the top of cinema. In seeing a recent documentary about the franchise with the release of "Creed" hitting theatres any day now Stallone said he never thought there would be a chance to do a sequel, but if there was the slight chance of it, he had the idea already in place for the story.
One huge plotline in the original Rocky that a lot of people don't know, or don't realize is, Rocky doesn't win in the original movie. He takes Apollo Creed the distance, but loses in a decision.
One of the common mistakes people who never seen the movie or never paid attention to the movie make when discussing it. So this time Rocky gets his rematch against the champion. It has the pretty basic premise that the first one did, but once the again the story and the actors shine throughout the film.
I would say this is the last Rocky film in the franchise that would be considered really good filmmaking. Between the acting and the story this movie delivers once again.
