Review of Rocky Balboa (2006) by Brianr. — 20 Dec 2006
Going into this movie, I thought it would be hard to take it seriously, but surprisingly it wasn't. It doesn't break new ground, and it is not quite like the original, but there is just something that works with this film.
None of the characters are cardboard cutouts (though the son is a nominee for that) and their is an actual depth to the relationships. Stallone does a favorable job at keeping his mumbling character alive, using nostalgia as an advantage but not resting on it.
It is nearly impossible to leave this movie without a smile, as it will actually make you feel good. Don't expect an Oscar winner, but have fun with it.
