Review of Rocky Balboa (2006) by Brianf. — 21 Dec 2006
Anti-"Rocky Balboa" critics, who are just as entitled to their own subjectivity and experience as I or anyone else, baffle me with their criticisms. Are eternal themes such as haunting history, ineffable burns inside, and saying goodbye supposed to be removed from art even though they cannot be removed from the human experience? Or can only King Lear's and pretentious cafe loungers do the talking now? Stallone brings poetry from Rocky, Paulie, and others that is powerful--and matches the characters (most of which were solidly acted).
Read interviews, check some reviews, and then go enjoy the million-to-one shot saying goodbye in beautiful fashion. I give it a 9.2. Stallone accomplished what seemed insane and impossible. I plan to see it again.
Heart exploration trumps ivory cynicism.
