Review of Rocky Balboa (2006) by Tag T — 05 Feb 2011
A fitting end to the saga of an American icon. Stallone has kept this character dear to his heart after all this time and it shows in this finale to the series. It's toned down greatly over the last 3 films and it adds a lot of depth into the character and the people around him.
While certainly more somber than any other, it doesn't feel depressing. It presents itself in a realistic fashion that you feel the pain of each character, but see their spirit in how they deal. Rocky is as likable as ever and still has that same go-getter attitude and optimism. Burt Young really sells Paulie even more and adds new qualities that were lacking in the past.
It is hurt by it's formulaic plot and occasionally cliche characters, including the renegade son who's underutilized a great deal, but one can overlook that because of Stallone's charm. Plus, the fight at the end is done very well and is quite suspenseful as it carried on. Truly 'Rocky Balboa' is a knock out.
My Grade: A-.
