Review of Rocky (1976) by The D — 05 Jan 2016
Not a polished film in any way, Stallone makes this one a classic despite its many flaws. Winning the Oscar for best film, Stallone was wrongfully snubbed for Best Actor. Not that he is in any way a great actor, the sheer power of his presence here is undeniable.
Sometimes a film is a winner despite all else because it speaks to the human experience and raw emotion. Rocky is a simple guy that we can all relate to, and his pursuit of self-respect is a universal experience that even the Academy could not deny.
Stallone turned down many lucrative offers insisting that he and only he could play Rocky. He was right. This epic film is an underdog that became an undeniable winner, just like Rocky himself.
