The first and best Rocky is a classic. The themes are old and it's the standard underdog story, Rocky works because Stallone's character is someone that you want to root for. Part babbling moron and part simpleton warrior, Rocky lives in a sort of poetic reality that is quasi realistic and hammy skid row.
Burt Young is great as Paulie and Carl Weathers rocks as Apollo Creed. The cast is good and make decent characters. Who hasn't done something triumphantly while thinking of Rocky running on the steps?
