Review of Rocky (1976) by Kyle H — 22 May 2014
The only crowning achievement from Sylvester Stallone. It's no wonder people thought he was going to be the next Marlon Brando when this film was released. Sadly, he failed to live up to that reputation in the years to follow.
This was an uplifting film that was made during a time when moviegoers needed to be uplifted (thankfully Star Wars would also come out a year later). It has the dark realism of early-mid 70's pictures, but it grants us such a powerful sense of hope.
It tells us that an dim-witted, insecure nobody can get the girl and become the most inspirational figure of his time. All it takes is for him to fight his fears, take life's punches and "go the distance".
