Review of Rockstar (2011) by Ambareesh J — 19 Nov 2011
A long, long, long (not surprising for an indian Bollywood film) romantic and dramatic story. Rockstar is simply the rise to stardom of an aspiring musician, mixed with a love story. Indeed, I thought it was quite inspired by the famous and very dramatic 1970 Love Story, even the end (sorry for the spoiler).
The film plays quite well with the classic image of the artist as a rebel full of pain. The good thing about films that last 2h30+ is that they delve into the characters. As a result, I felt quite intimate with the main character, the rockstar.
The narrative is over complicated with constant flashbacks, that are often unnecessary and slow down the rhythm of the story. The photography is beautiful and takes us from India to Prague. the music, interestingly, is a mix of rock, indian and some light czech influence.
It is interesting. And, no there is no typical bollywood dance and song!! Indian cinema moves closer to western cinema. As for the audience, still some distance to go: I was one of 3 non indian people in the packed cinema.
