Review of Rockstar (2011) by Krishna S — 08 Dec 2011
Every once in a while, you come across a movie that not only makes you think, but also touches your heart. For me, that's what "Rockstar" is. I honestly don't know how to review this one. At the moment, I am in awe.
The storyline takes place in a semi-flashback format and Jordan's life is revealed throughout the plot. I won't give away anything about the story, except that the movie is a love story and it's very touching and heartfelt, without being mushy.
Ranbir Kapoor is a STAR. This man can act the pants off any young actor in Bollywood. While watching Janardan Jakhar, you do not once feel like you're watching Ranbir Kapoor. He is the character throughout. You feel for him during his turmoil and smile during his moments of happiness. He is perfect. I can't say anything more. Ranbir Kapoor is the next superstar, hands down.
Nargis Fakhri....I thought she was perfect for the role and very cute. That's what the role required of her - to be lovable. And she is. The only moment where I wanted to cringe was "Junglee Jawani Part 2" and that was just because it was a poor joke and wasn't funny....the writer's fault, not hers really. Haha. Nargis was refreshing to watch and it was nice to see a new face in Bollywood given a good role. Her pairing with Ranbir was endearing and you could feel the chemistry.
The songs were mesmerizing. I have listened to the songs so many times, I wore them out. But after watching the movie, I am back to playing the soundtrack on repeat. All the songs were picturized brilliantly, especially "Kun Faya Kun" and "Nadaan Parindey." I also really loved "Tum Ho.".
Imtiaz Ali knows what he's doing when he makes a movie. The only place I can fault him is for making a slightly too long movie. Does it compare to his past films? Well, it was a very different sort of movie for Imtiaz and he moved out of his comfort zone, so it's hard to compare. I definitely liked it less than Jab We Met and Socha Na Tha, but more than Love Aaj Kal (which I also loved). However, I feel it had more shades of brilliance than any of his other films. :).
For me, this film is a must-watch. I really, genuinely loved it.
