Review of RocknRolla (2008) by Edgar C — 31 Jan 2010
This is my own personal and probably false theory:
During the last two decades, cinema took two very erroneous branches:
1) Melodramatic exaltation of exaggerated patriotism and clichés.
2) Style over substance, a branch that Tarantino popularized.
A new movement was created afterwards, which ambitioned to dethrone the second branch, and it was called "CGI over substance". Trying to keep the style-over-substance storytelling alive, Ritchie proudfully belongs to the Tarantino fan club and releases a third film that tries to resemble Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch but that covers new areas.
Anyway, the film is a complete mess and when it is facing towards a particular direction, it suddenly changes its style and ends up going nowhere. It is fun I reckon, but it manages to confuse. Disappointing, but I bet my balls this will be more accurate than a Sherlock Holmes adapted to a new era.
59/100.
