Review of RocknRolla (2008) by Maria H — 18 Mar 2012
I just love Guy Ritchie movies, and so I love this one too. Gerard Butler, Tom Hardy, and everyone else in it are all pitch-perfect. To me, the surprise of the movie was the hilarious yet kind of tender and sweet way it presented Handsome Bob's (Tom Hardy) crush on One Two (Gerard Butler).
Sure, it was played for laughs, and One Two did initially get very upset by the reveal that Bob wants to spend his last night in freedom with One Two rather than strippers. But every scene with the two characters actually played as though they BOTH absolutely cared for each other, before and after that reveal. It's partly a testament to the actors, but also the script. The scene in the car when Bob confesses his desire to One Two, and One Two actually (after a freakout), kind of wants to help him out was simultaneously funny and touching.
One Two's scene with Mumbles (Idris Elba) when they discuss Bob played the same way, as did the scene in the car with all three of them when Bob is trying to get the info about the snitch from the lawyer. One Two: "I'm going back to bed." Handsome Bob "Can I come?" Perfect timing the whole way for Hardy and Butler! And their slowdance scene was perfection as well. I now want ANY kind of buddy movie starring Elba, Hardy and Butler.
