Review of Rocket Science (2007) by Ty H — 26 Jun 2008
It took me a while to realize that this was a pretty good movie. we want so much to see everything work as planned and for things to go right and for hollywood to make us feel all good inside. but instead, this film reminded us that you don't always get the girl, being a teen really sucks, parents often eff up who you are and who you become, and that miraculous cures for social retardation don't really exist. sometimes I like being told the truth by a movie.
The acting is exceptional, for the most part. the kid was pitch-perfect in his speech impediment. I hadn't seen him before, but he's got a bright future. also, the characters were all delightfully quirky and odd. but not over the top annoying.
It had a very Wes Anderson feel to it, which is okay. sometimes imitation, or something like it, is annoying. but it worked here. from the Baldwin-sounding voice-over to the extremely random, yet meaningful lines some characters spout at times, it feels Wes Andersonish. but it works, so I forgive it.
Extremely well-made. the director knew what he was doing and the scenes and shots flow.
Watch it, but don't expect hollywood.
