Review of Rocket Science (2007) by Steven P — 14 Jul 2010
Being a teenager is not easy, especially if you are an outcast; This has been the premise of countless movies over the years and this movie does not really do anything to break out of the mold. I wouldn't go so far as to say that this one is particularly special or outstanding, but it is quirky and has its moments. It's funny but mostly extremely awkward. It has very sharp and witty dialogue with very interesting characters.
Hal Hefner is an unremarkable teenager with a severely crippling stutter who is recruited onto the school's debate team by the team's devious champion Ginny Ryerson played by Anna Kendrick. Kendrick is really what makes this movie. Her sharp quick-witted tongue makes me wish I joined the debate team in high school.
It's no 'Donnie Darko' but it is a clever, touching story of teenage angst.
