Review of Rock Star (2001) by Mike L — 15 Sep 2008
Lets go back to the 80's where Metal ruled the world. Mark Wahlberg is Chris "Izzy" Cole and is a tribute singer to his favorite band Steel Dragon. He gets discovered and replaces the old singer of Steel Dragon! Sounds like it could never happen, right? Wrong, this movie is based on the real life story of Tim "Ripper" Owens becoming the new singer for Judas Priest.
As a Metal fan I love this movie, and having Zakk Wylde on guitar and Jason Bonham on drums (son of legendary Led Zeppelin drummer, John Bonham) make Steel Dragon the greatest band from a film since Spinal Tap.
Wahlberg has never been cooler and even Jennifer Aniston was good in this movie! Big drawback: most if not all of the Steel Dragon songs are not actual Steel Dragon songs. But simply metal songs that were not that popular, such as Stand Up (Sammy Hagar) and Long Live Rock 'N Roll (Rainbow).
But for any rock or metal fan this is a movie you need to see.
