Review of Rock Star (2001) by Michael T — 21 Jan 2009
Based on the real-life story of Tim "Ripper" Owens who replaced Rob Halford as the lead singer of English Heavy Metal giants Judas Priest. The film is set in the late 1980s (Owen replaced Halford in the mid-1990s); this allows the film makers to spoof the whole heavy metal scene in the 1980s at its height before Nirvanna came along.
Its not great and Jennifer Anniston is miscast as Wahlberg's manager/love interest. The VH-1 spoof at the end is a hoot. In real life, Halford rejoined Priest in 2004 and they have sucessfully toured the world.
Old school English heavy metal was not killed by grunge, thank god.
