Review of Rock of Ages (2012) by Brook Y — 27 Jun 2016
Rock of Ages (any edition) gets 2 stars for the music alone. The rest of the movie is a very campy dud. Ironic that Tom Cruise didn't have to do much with his mis-shapen body as an aging rock star (as seen in the last Mission Impossible movie - what's up with that stomach/belly?).
The music and singing are great classic choices too bad the kids from Glee or the cast from Hairspray did the musical revival much better. And considering that Catherine Zeta-Jones was in the great Chicago and won an Oscar, I feel like this is a huge career step down and disappointment.
She's a great singer, but.... I was surprised with the lead actress and how well she did despite being considered just a dancer. The movie I would give maybe a 1 star. I guess this makes a much better musical on the stage.
