Review of Rocco and His Brothers (1960) by Kevin M — 11 Apr 2007
A modern Greek tragedy; "Rocco e I suoi fratelli" is a rich, compelling tapestry that, in my opinion, best crystallises the passion, artistry and social conscience of Luchino Visconti's filmmaking.
An epic merging of social realism and immense operatic drama that interweaves the lives, loves and moral corruptions of five brothers who have arrived in Milan in search of work. Alain Delon and Renato Salvatori are the standouts as the saintly Rocco and his brutish sibling Simone, whilst Annie Giradot is superb as the World-worn whore who acts as a catalyst for the violent, tragic spiral into which they descend.
An absolute masterpiece.
