Review of Robots (2005) by Catherine S — 24 Jan 2011
Robots is a mildly entertaining animated feature, with great visuals but a less than stellar story.
The movie stars Rodney Copperbottom, a young robot from Rivet Town. He dreams of moving to Robot City and becoming an inventor working for Mr. Bigweld, his childhood hero. When he finally arrives at the city, he realizes the city's outmodes are being terrorized by a villainous woman named Madame Gasket and Ratchet, the new CEO of Bigweld industries. Rodney must join forces with a group of rag-tag out-modes to save robots all over the world.
Did that last bit give you a feeling of deja vu? It should, this story is nothing original, and unfortunately this movie does nothing to make it new. The characters are your usual cut-outs, with pretty good voice acting. This movie is weighted down from being really hilarious with random and stupid pop culture references (ranging from "Singin' in the Rain" to Brittany Spears) to gross out humor (this movie has some sort of thing for jokes about butts.) The real redeemable bit for Robots is the visuals. This movie looks great, with creative designs for every robot and futuristic coloring.
If you see Robots, don't see it for a new story or characters, just expect great visuals. It's not the best animated film, but it's certainly not the worst. (Real rating: 63%).
