Review of Robots (2005) by James S — 29 Jan 2011
Knockabout animation that turns out to be incredibly enjoyable family style fun.
Ewan Mcgregor lends his vocal talents to the hapless Rodney, a robot setting off for the imaginatively titled Robot City to flog his latest invention. It's a bit like Dragon's Den. There he uncovers a plot of greed and corruption by evil suit type robots to do away with old style robots.
Robots is helped incredibly by a very smart and sharp script, plus some great characterisation, particularly in it's dastardly bad guys. There are some good set pieces too, the flying ball ride through Robot city is extremely entertaining.
There are some good laughs along the way too which will appeal just as much to the adult audience and the kids and although the film is wholly predictable, if you're looking for high brow drama, you're looking in the wrong place.
Robots is a great slice of family entertainment, funny, occasionally poignant and with that good moral grounding we all need in our Sunday afternoon viewing.
