Review of Robot & Frank (2012) by Vickie B — 17 Feb 2013
This film has the power to work its way into your heart and mind! Looks simple, no over the top chase scenes, no multimillion dollar budget yet as Tom Long from the Detroit News brilliantly stated: "It hits all the right notes- romantic, fantastic, tragic and sweet".
Bravo to writer Christopher Ford, director Jake Schreier and the cast and crew of Robot & Frank. I would be thrilled to enjoy the company of that robot because you can engage on a conversation with it, plus it cooks, cleans, and looks after you.
What a dream! Sadly the world of this film is probably 40 or more years from now based on my assumptions of where we stand with technology today. Frank (Langella) is about 70 yrs old and in the early stages of dementia forgetting names and events, has bad eating habits and is very bored.
He reminisces about his younger days as a thief. Frank's son Hunter (Marsden) brings a robot to aid his father in daily chores. Initially Frank balks at the idea, hating his machine companion but as days pass by he becomes attached to the marvelous robot (voice of Peter Sarsgaard).
The plot turns into the sentimental story of a man, a robot and their groovy kind of love. This wonderful motion picture touches on the preciousness of memory, human and artificial and so many lonely souls out there would welcome into their lives this remarkable, incredible form of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Do not miss Robot & Frank, two thumbs way up!
