Review of Robot & Frank (2012) by Gregory D — 21 Jan 2014
An engaging story about ageing and dementia in a near future with domestic robots. It is Frank Langella's compelling central and very human performance that drives this film along with the fun rapport his character develops with the titular Robot, voiced in a measured and nuanced performance by Peter Sarsgaard.
Susan Sarandon provides a nice turn as a librarian seeing her library transformed into a modern curiosity and indeed the vision of this near future on display comes across as credible with convincing looking future technology appearing but not too frequently such as to labour the point.
Not entirely flawless - some of the supporting cast play it perhaps a bit too broadly and it does not quite seem to land a final punch - but highly recommended.
