Review of RoboCop 3 (1993) by Chris G — 30 Jul 2011
While it can be argued whether 2 is better than 3 when it comes to this series there is one thing that is certain, Robocop 3 takes the franchise another step in the direction of the family friendly PC world. Whatever the true reasons for this shift are, I tend to like to think it was mostly as a precursor to the television series which was released the following year.
This is my main dislike of this film. Despite the fact that the story was better written and directed when compared to the previous film, it seemed like set design took a back seat. In a time when things seem to be grittier and dirtier and more desparate than in previous installments, why does everything look so clean. Everything looks placed rather than naturally dirty and takes away from the feel of the picture.
Of course, changing out the actor who played Robocop didn't help but you had to know Weller wasn't going to stay on a sinking ship too long.
Robocop 3 isn't a bad film... it's just so far from the great film of the original that you can't help but compare... and be disappointed.
