Review of RoboCop 3 (1993) by Tom R — 14 Jan 2012
(1 Star) Holy crap... this movie is Highlander sequel bad... it's an Alien 3 slap to your face... in terms of sequels and the quality of their originals, Robocop 3 is easily one of the worst cinematic offenders.
Peter Weller was right to jump ship at this PG-13 borefest. Want to know how bad it is? Pick any scene; I mean it, there's something wrong in EVERY scene. Robocop doesn't even appear until 16 minutes into the film and he doesn't fire his weapon until 20.
There's zero humor in the film, no satire, and it's so clearly not shot in Detroit (and I'm being completely serious: Japan looks more like Detroit). The few characters who return (namely Robocop and Officer Anne Lewis, played by Nancy Allen) feel like completely different people.
The last film set up what could be a big battle between Robocop and Omni Consumer Products is completely squandered. The villains? Completely generic and forgettable. Action scenes? They suck and what's worse, they're not bloody or gory, which is what made the first two iconic.
What's almost surreal is the amount of recognizable actors who are in this film: Rip Torn, Mako, CCH Pounder, Bradley Whitford, Jeff Garlin, Jill Hennessy, and Steven Root. Robocop 2 may have its detractors, but at least that felt like a real Robocop film; it was bloody, satirical, funny, and in Detroit.
.. not this PG-13 garbage. Robocop 3 has no clue what made the first film so great. It's one of those movies that should be ignored... just pretend the series ended after part 2.
