Review of RoboCop (2014) by Mick W — 15 Mar 2015
This 2014 reboot recently appeared as a free title on Amazon Prime, so we gave it a shot last night. I am impressed by not only the casting and production value but also the relevance of the story adaptation to today's headlines.
The film deals with important philosophical and ethical questions such as what makes us human, how far are we willing to let technology direct our lives, and when should we insist upon liberty at the expense of safety.
Other themes include media bias and control, the dangers of modern policing, the advances of biotechnology, privatization of the criminal justice system, the dangers of popular opinion being swayed by clever marketing and propaganda, corruption in government and politics, the importance of due process, and the resilience of the human spirit.
The film's creators did an excellent job presenting these issues without tipping the scales on either side.
