Review of RoboCop 2 (1990) by Mich E — 25 Apr 2009
I think Robocop 2, the actual new cyborg created by OCP to replace the first "obsolete" robocop in favor of a drug-addicted, psycho-killer's mind is a great concept that has unfortunate results. Robocop 2, we're still talking the cyborg and not the movie, is too clunky and not human enough. That's the point -- that he has a human brain, and when we can't see that, we're not really talking robcop, we're talking robot. Not as compelling.
And since they pay less attention to the mechanics of this new robocop body, it's interesting that it is Robocop 2, now we're talking the movie, that we have the more interesting exploration of "the body" -- what does it feel like for robocop when his body is taken apart? How does he suffer, when it is the cyborg part of him that is hurting?
I was surprised to find Lewis in her full human form for Robcop 2. I guess it was just wishful thinking, but at the end of Robocop 1 when she says to Murphy "I'm all messed up" (or something like that), and he says "They can fix everything" (again, something like that), I thought for sure she would become robo, too. But I'm mostly glad that she didn't.
