Review of RoboCop (1987) by Sidney S — 07 Sep 2013
A sci fi action classic! Robocop is a rather intelligent sci fi film built on bloody action sequences, great direction, awesome effects and visuals (for its time) and a really good story.
Robocop is a one of the high points of 80's action films one that is not brainless or cheesy. Robocop is a film that actually has a brain. Director Paul Verhoeven puts together a film based in the near future when a cop is nearly killed in the line of duty he is reconstructed as a cyborg built to serve and protect the city of Detroit. However Robocop is more human than he is machine, that is the entire heart and bulk of the story. The cyborg dreams, but they are memories where he realizes he was human , he had a life and begins to rediscover his emotions. Robocop discovers that the company that built him is ultimately the enemy a corrupt and dirty business. Peter Weller plays Robocop and his performance is great in giving the indestructible machine a heart, and a mind that is haunted by his past upon discovering who he is.
The action sequences are top notch, explosive and dynamic. Featuring amazing shootouts and just pure badass sequences of Robocop in action, taking out all the crime off the streets. What I admire about this film above most modern action films is that this film retains a significant level of grittiness. The way it is filmed it is not very bright but darker, greyer. The way Vergoeven portrays a future Detroit he shows it is a corrupted, dirty city that is overrun with crime. A city that needs a Robocop. For 1987 the technology shown is impressive, with Robocop's look and functions as well as the weaponary, the cars and look itself of Detroit/Delta city.
Robocop is a cult classic and for fans of old school action films, and grit it is for sure a must watch.
