Review of Robinson Crusoe on Mars (1964) by Richard S — 18 Oct 2007
Maybe it should be re-titled Raf Simons on Mars. The main costume is so great!
Normally I hate sci-fi, but this works reasonably well because it strips away much of pseudo-science mumbo jumbo. As the title suggests, it's about isolation and coming to terms with a new environment. This just happens to take place on a bunch of 60s-era soundstages. The creators get a lot of mileage out of the three main characters and noticeably limited budget. They take the subject matter slightly more seriously than I expected, so thankfully, it never falls into pure camp mode. This isn't something I'd try to convince people to go out of their way to see, but for genre fans it's worth taking note of.
Be aware that if you just want to see the entire plot laid out in about 4 minutes you can watch the trailer. It lacks any sense of despair, but at least you can see the costumes and stages.
