Review of Robinson Crusoe on Mars (1964) by Paul C — 17 Apr 2008
On the face of it, this might appear to be a fairly B-grade piece of nonsense, but once you get into it, you find that it's a better film than you might have expected. Certainly the alien spaceships look extremely tacky, but the story itself is quite good (being, as it is, fairly closely based on the Defoe original).
Maybe I have a sick mind, but when the astronaut is stuck on Mars and running out of food, it occurred to me: why didn't he eat the monkey? I actually think it's laudable that he didn't, after all his situation at that point must have seemed hopeless: why debase himself further by killing his only companion?
Of course, the movie doesn't even raise the possibility. I wonder: is it better to think of doing something bad, yet have the moral sense to refrain from doing it, or simply not to think of it at all?
