Before you watch this movie you have to watch Robin Hood Prince of Thieves or else you will not get a lot of the parodies. Brooks is is definitely self indulgent and even though this one can't stand the test of time like his parodies of the old westerns or Star Wars it's almost like he watched Prince of Thieves all Mystery Science Theater style and just couldn't resist.
He definitely takes it to the next level with his screwball style, double entendres galore, and sight gags. Brooks, like Tim Burton, is one of the few writer/directors to have such a signature style that you know without looking that you are watching one of his movies.
His are low brow, but always clever and quite funny.
