Review of Robin Hood (2010) by Daniel S — 02 Jan 2012
I'm not really sure why this film has received such negative reviews. I get that many critics didn't like the darker tone that the story took, but in my opinion that made the film interesting and captivating.
Sometimes trying to make the film darker and edgier backfires spectacularly, but this time it hit just the right spot. Plus, the actors were all keenly talented (Cate Blanchett especially was brilliant as Lady Marion), the film had a lot of good humour and the new twist to the Robin Hood mythos was a refreshing one, with him being a common archer instead of a nobleman.
But yeah, the film has its fair share of problems as well, the biggest one being the final third of the film, which is filled with bad decisions and poor judgement. Why was Lady Marion in the final battle? Why have such a cliché final battle at all? What was the point of including a civil rights movement into a story that didn't need one? This movie would have been a masterpiece as far as adventure/fantasy movies go, but unfortunately its promising ideas were undermined by the weak ending.
But even that ending cannot take away the fact that this is an entertaining piece of fiction that's well worth a watch and my personal recommendation.
