Review of Robin Hood (2010) by Stuart M — 03 Dec 2012

Ridley Scott's mastery of stunning visuals, character, relationship, emotional and sensual film-making is yet again demonstrated in Robin Hood.

A lovely twist on a story that's been done several times, Scott tells us the fiction/history leading up to Robin eventually being out-lawed to a life in the woods. More than once my breath was taken away with cinematography and lighting, and visuals that I wished would linger a while longer.

The plot is decent enough, albeit once (Maid Marion coming to the beach with the kiddies) I thought we could have done without that bit. But the love story between Robin and Marion, I've never seen done better. Huge testament to Crowe and Blanchett's acting ability, of course. So believable, vulnerable and lovely.

Ridley Scott's penchant for the sensual is felt throughout great and small moments of the film ... the gait of the king's horse, the sound of the arrows as they release from the archer's bow, the horses hooves in battle, the impossibly beautiful face of Cate Blanchett and you can almost smell the green forest after a rain ...
