Review of Robin Hood (2010) by Michael V — 15 Nov 2011
Many people had a beef with this because it wasn't the Robin Hood they know. To them I say I'M GLAD!!! We got Aryle Flynn, Sean Connery, Kevin Costner, Mel Brooks, and a talking fox all giving us the same story.
Plus many others. I got a brand new story this time around and it grab the characters shook them about and dropped the cliches and made them more human and relatable. I mean Crowe's Robin Hood didn't feel like the noble hero and MacFadyen's Nottingham to me was more of a conflicted character then pure villany.
Max von Sydow can still deliever a perfect performance and Cate Blanchett was amazing channeling Katherine Hepburn. From the screenplay, to the cinematography and the performance, the film is based on solid grounding.
Indeed, we couldn't imagine less from the people assembled on the project. And the first signs are indeed good, starting as an origin story that traces Robin's steps returning from the Crusades and arriving in Nottingham.
The plot is immediately both compelling and fresh with regards to the well known tale. But with all my praise about it... it's still flawed and it hurts me to say that about a Ridley Scott film. The man's attention to detail is just brillant.
