Review of Robin Hood (2010) by Peter N — 08 Aug 2012
Well, it's no Gladiator. In fact, it isn't Robin Hood either. Not all the way, at least. Ridley Scott was obviously inspired by the wave of reboots that have come out in the last few years, as this film tries to tell the origin story of Robin Hood.
In true Ridley Scott fashion, the sets are large and awe-inspiring, and the battle scenes are epic. The film's failure to live up to the hype is in its bland storyline and miscast Russell Crowe, whose age makes it kind of hard to believe that this is the beginning of Robin Hood's career.
Hey, at least he speaks with an English accent. Mark Strong gives a solid performance, further cementing his status as a typecast villain, and I've always liked Cate Blanchett, no matter what quality of film she's in.
If you like period epics in the same vein as Gladiator, this is worth checking out. Just don't expect an epic of equal stature.
