Review of Robin Hood (2009) by Andy L — 04 Nov 2009
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves receives mixed reviews, I love it and think it is a great film. From the first time I saw this film all the way back in 91' at the movies I fell in love with the legend of Robin Hood and it has stuck with me.
Sure there are some hang ups with some cheesy acting and maybe even some bad directing moments but still the spirit of the legend of Robin is found in this film. It stirs within me the want to live in Sherwood Forest and build awesome farms and houses.
Great performances from Costner, Freeman & Slater and a fantastic performance from the one and only Alan Rickman we have a fun and adventurous movie that has plenty of action and good drama. Although Kevin Reynolds directing can be a little hit and miss throughout his career he provides us with some beautiful shots of the land and good dialog. Also Reynolds personal touches of making Will Scarlett a long lost brother and the Witch the mother of the Sheriff it all adds to the goodness of this film.
In the Director's cut we get more storyline behind the Witch and the Sheriff of Nottingham, which adds to the goodness of the overall picture.
With great storytelling, that is backed up by a great musical score you are left with a win-win situation. One to have in the DVD collection and one of my favorite films of all time.
Directing - 14/20.
Performances - 17/20.
Visual/Special Effects - 14/20.
Musical Score - 15/20.
Entertainment - 20/20.
80% - A Childhood favorite, that still entertains me.
